Cabarete, Dominican Republic
Cabarete is located on the north coast of the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola. Only 30 minutes from the Puerto Plata International airport, Cabarete is easy to reach from the United States, Canada and Europe. Cabarete has long been known for its exceptional wind and weather. The wind can blow year round but the most consistent months are Winter (Jan - April) and Summer (June - August). Just off the coast, the ocean gets very deep and the swell is considerable. The coastline around Cabarete is spotted with white sand beaches making downwind entry and exit points possible but good knowledge of the coastline is necessary.
Cabarete Bay to Playa Chiquita
This is one of the longer downwind runs that can start in Cabarete; it takes you from town to just past the Puerto Plata airport. Just over 20km, this run will test your skills and your legs. The initial 7km requires that you continually ride bumps to the right so you stay out to sea, after you reach Sosua, you can ride directly to the finish with the wind and swell lined up perfectly.
Cabarete Bay to Playa Cangrejo
This is one of the longer downwind runs which starts in Cabarete Bay and follows the wind and swell to just past the Puerto Plata airport Just under 25km, this run will test your skills and your legs. The initial 9km requires that you continually ride to the right so you stay out to sea, after you reach coastal Sosua, you can ride directly into the setting sun with the wind and swell lined up perfectly for the remainder of the run.
Playa Ermita to Cabarete Bay
This run starts 45 minutes east of Cabarete in the small fishing village of Ermita. Once you get lined up outside about 2km, this run is a direct line to Cabarete. This 22km run can be done in about an hour. Going late in the day is best and the run ends right on Cabarete Beach.
Playa Luperon to Punta Rucia
This downwind run is the most spectacular the north coast has to offer but it requires travel and patience. Playa Luperon is a 2 hour drive West of Cabarete and the 30km run finishes at the scenic seaside village of Punta Rucia. After you complete this run you can swim, relax and have a sunset cocktail. The return trip home is nearly 3 hours so it is recommended to stay the night and maybe visit the famous Cayo Arena the next day.
